Huckleberry After Dark @ Plaza Damansara

00:18:00

I am a big fan of the classic tale of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde; a lively and buoyant exterior hiding something deeper and edgier. The idea of two totally different beings occupying the same space may not seem possible in a real life context, but that's where Huckleberry After Dark comes into play.

Located at a discreet corner of Plaza Damansara, Huckleberry Food and Fare is your typical daytime cafe, complete with the bright cakes and graceful chatter of the taitais chilling their afternoon away. But when the sun sets, this cafe gleefully rips off its cheery outer layer, transforming into something darker and edgier more suited for the night.

Huckleberry After Dark is the perfect place to spend a night of chilling with your friends. When I reached the cafe after work for the review session, I was immediately grooving along to the perfect RnB soundtrack. The cafe keeps to its name; making sure that the overall feel of the place is as laidback and soulful as you can imagine.

Because Huckleberry After Dark should be visited after it's dark out (duhh), the rumbling in your stomach will be much stronger. Thankfully, unlike most nightspots, there are actually food that don't only consist of French Fries and the occasional tapas. Inspired by Los Angeles street food, the fare at Huckleberry After Dark has something that will delight your palate, as your pair your meal with a zesty beer or two.

Like, for example, there are the appetizers; great for sharing with your friends over a beer. The House Guac, which is basically chips with the homemade guacamole, is something you should really try, because it's addictive as heck.

I know of no other better pairing for your beer than the South Korea inspired K-POP Frenzy. Lathered with the spicy Korean Gochujang sauce, these flaming chicken wings will get your night off to a hot start.

There are choices of tacos as well, for those of you who like to have a bit of a Mexican night out with your buddies. The Chuck Norris; beef barbacoa tacos slathered with BBQ-infused root beer sauce, pico de gallo (basically a salad mix) and sour cream, lives up to its namesake by relentlessly punching your hunger in the face until it screams for mercy.

If you're up to something fishy for the night (and I know we all are *winkwink*), go for the Drop The Bass; battered fish tacos with pico de gallo and a ton of spicy hot jalapenos.

It is during this point of time that most people will be feeling a little hot under the collar, y'know, from all the spicy food. So what better time than to order from the wide selection of bottled beers they have?

Personally, the craft beers are pretty darn unique; from Mountain Goat's Fancy Pants and Two Step to Brewdog's 5 A.M and Punk IPA, these are the beers you don't see on your average night out.

Appetizers and beer aren't going to keep a hungry man satisfied, a fact Huckleberry After Dark knows very well. The Bird Waffle was first on the menu.

At a glance, the Bird Waffle is named exactly as its ingredients suggest, it's basically a buttermilk-fried chicken thigh clamped in between a few of their homemade waffles, with hot honey sauce available. Yes, you read that right. It's basically a fried chicken waffle burger. Do you hear that sound? That's the sound of your tastebuds rejoicing. What a time to be alive.

What is street food without the quintessential all-American hotdog? Nothing, that's what. Which is precisely why we were served the Chilli Con Kanye. A chilli dog served with American cheese, sour cream and  the signature in-house chilli, the Chilli Con Kanye promises to be unforgettable.

Like its scandal-loving namesake, the Chilli Con Kanye will be creating more scandals when the made-in-house chilli dog makes passionate love to your tastebuds. It ain't Yeezy being a Kanye.

If you hadn't noticed up to this point, Huckleberry After Dark uses incredibly punny names for all their food and drinks. I first noticed it about half an hour into the review session, when my eyes glanced down at the menu and I read What The Cluck.

My eyes widened even further when I saw the actual What The Cluck, a gigantic burger served with deep fried buttermilk chicken thighs and slathered with a delicious mayo-Sriracha sauce. It was one of those names that made actual sense, because that's the exact thing I said when bit into the burger.

Not mad about buttermilk deep fried chicken? Huckleberry After Dark's got you covered. Just like how they covered the British rock band Queen classic, Another One Bites The Crust. A huge pizza served with a their homemade tomato sauce, chicken sausage, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese and topped with an egg, this isn't something you would want to miss out on.

Especially when the alcohol is flowing freely and the tummy is rumbling.

I don't know if you have a second stomach like me, but my dessert stomach doesn't get the nutrients that the normal stomach gets. The Mad Batter, is something that even your dessert stomach will love. It's a chocolate pudding, made with chocolate fondant, and topped with marshmallows, cookie crumbs and butter biscuits on the side. It's so ridiculously and deliciously chocolatey that you better be prepared.

With the food out of the way, the main course comes in. Drinks play a huge part of making any night out great, and it's extremely fortunate that Huckleberry After Dark offers a wide range of drinks; including cocktails, mocktails, and something called the Alcohol Infused Milkshakes. Trust me, it's something you have to try at least once to believe.

The suggestion would be to go for your alcohol milkshakes first, before turning your hand towards the cocktails. The Canna Butter Kisses is an infusion of vodka and Frangelico, but with the odd addition of peanut butter, strawberry jam and peanut butter biscuits. No seriously. If you're a peanut butter lover, this is your golden nectar.

Summertime; a mixture of gin, coconut ice cream, fresh lime and mint is another fresh and tangy milkshake for adults.

The Salted Caramel Milkshake is possibly the only one in the entire menu with a normal sounding name, but it's also possibly one of the best milkshake experience I had. The problem with all these alcohol milkshakes is, you can't really drink so many milkshakes in one sitting without the eternal feeling of bloatedness and guilt creeping in. I know because I speak from experience.

The highlight of the night usually ends with tail. Okay, that came out wrong. The cocktails offered at Huckleberry After Dark are top notch, and like their menu, the diversity and uniqueness of each cocktail is worth noting. I would try to list down what I love about each of the cocktails, but because of a self imposed word limit (ie: laziness), I'm just going to put down the name of each cocktail we managed to try that night, along with a short description.

Minion Juice
For all of you who don't know Mandarin, this cocktail will be the best fit. A mix of homemade banana rum, homemade pandan syrup and coconut water, get your minion on for the rest of the night.

Southern 75
The Southern 75 is a cocktail of bourbon, lemon and lime juice, homemade basil and mint syrup, with a bottle of Corona poured in for good measure. The reason it's called Southern 75 is your night is about to get DOWN if you gulp down this bad boy. This is the ultimate happy juice.

Pisco Sour
Sour, tangy and sweet are some of the words that can be used to describe this cocktail. Armed with Pisco, lemon juice, sugar and, oddly, egg white (seriously!), this is a...um...unique drink you probably should try at least once.

Basil Grande
It's got a Grande name, and an even more Grande taste. Featuring a unique vanilla and cardamom vodka, with forest berry puree, basil, black pepper and soda, this is a cocktail with plenty of conflicting tastes.

Red Sangria
The finest sharing drink that almost all the ladies use to bond with, the red sangria is pretty red sangria-ish. With red wine, brandy, fruits, mango, orange juice, homemade basil and mint syrup, it's time to get your girl date on with this. Guys too.

So if it's a night out with your friends, or just looking for a place with good food and good vibes, Huckleberry After Dark might just be the place for you. Give it a try, because any place with an "After Dark" tacked on the back is bound be be equal parts fun, edgy and maybe even a little bit naughty.
